Syllabus

At Footworks Dance Academy we offer classes for ages 2 to adult in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip hop and Break Dancing from beginner to advanced levels.

Tutus and Tumbling - 2 1/2 to 3 years
This 45 minute music and body awareness class teaches your child the fundamentals of dance as well as basic tumbling skills. This program is designed to increase your child's musicality, coordination, flexibility and body awareness through exercise, games and learning a routine to be performed at recital at the end of the year.

Kinderdance - 4 years
This 45 minute program introduces your child to the fundamentals and basic skills of ballet. As your child progresses through this program their coordination, musicality, flexibility and body awareness will be challenged in order to prepare them for the Pre-Primary Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) class the following year. These skills will be utilized in a dance routine which will be performed at the annual dance recital.

Ballet - 5 years to adult

Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) method

The Royal Academy of Dance was established in 1920 and since that time has become one of the largest dance education and training organisations in the world with over 15,500 member across 82 countries. The R.A.D. has two examinations syllabi: Graded and Vocational which is being taught to more then 250,000 students world-wide.

Graded Syllabus
There are ten levels in the graded syllabus Pre-Primary - Grade 8 Award which are open to both male and female candidates and begin at age 5. There are three components to the Graded Syllabus: Classical, Free Movement and Character work. These exams are designed for any student with a passion for dance and a willingness to extend themselves to the best of their ability.

Pre-Primary - Primary - Beginning at age 5
This 45 minute class will be your child’s first exclusive introduction to ballet. They will learn basic ballet technique in a fun environment. Students who excel in these classes will be invited to participate in a Royal Academy of Dance examinations. All class participants will perform a routine in the end of the year recital.

Grades 1 - 2 - Beginning at age 7
This 60 minute class will build on the technique and steps learned by your child in pre-primary and primary. Students will learn a set syllabus in preparation for a R.A.D. examinations as well as a routine for the end of the year recital.

Grade 3 - 8 - Ages 7 and up
This program is a more intensive development of your child's ballet technique. Commencing with Grade 3, classes will be extended to 90 minutes and students will be required to attend ballet class twice a week. Throughout the year students will learn set syllabus in preparation for their R.A.D. examinations. Students will learn a routine for recital in one of their classes and concentrate on technique in the other.

Vocational Syllabus
The Vocational syllabus is a continuation of a students classical ballet training which begins during their Graded examinations and continues once a student has obtained their Grade Eight Award. Vocational training begins between ages 9 to 12 and is geared towards those engaging in the serious study of ballet. Pointe work is introduced during this syllabus for the first time. There are six levels of Vocational Examinations starting with Intermediate Foundation and concluding with the Solo Seal Award.

All levels of vocational exams require a 90 minute class once a week with the option of a 60 minute pointe class for more advanced students. Students who excel in these classes and are invited to participate in an examination and will be required to take an additional 90 minute private or semi private lesson once a week.

Jazz & Tap
During these classes Footworks utilizes both A.D.A.P.T. and C.D.T.A. techniques.

Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers (A.D.A.P.T.) is a system of dance teaching used in over 150 studio across Canada. Established in 1979 by Brian Foley A.D.A.P.T. aims to create technically strong dancers with good artistic impression.

Canadian Dance Teacher Association (C.D.T.A.) is a nationally recognized body who aims to create an organization of dance teacher throughout Canada. C.D.T.A. examinations will be held annually at Footworks. These exams consist of 9 levels beginning with Preliminary and concluding with Advanced.

Jazz
Footworks Dance Academy offers jazz classes from ages 5 to adult ranging from beginner to advanced levels. These classes have an upbeat and fun filled atmosphere focused on improving technique, strength and flexibility which will enhance students jumps, turns and stage presence. Students in these classes will perform in the annual recital held at the end of the year.

Tap
Footworks Dance Academy offers tap classes for students ages 5 to adult from beginner to advanced levels. These classes use the technique developed in both ballet and jazz to heighten musicality and allow students to create rhythms through foot articulations in a enjoyable environment. Students in these classes will perform in the annual recital.

Lyrical
Footworks Dance Academy offers lyrical classes to students ages 8 and up. These classes are designed for students who have a strong background in both ballet and jazz. Lyrical classes will further develop students’ technique while focusing on expressing emotion through dance.

Hip Hop and Break Dancing
Footworks Dance Academy offers these classes to dancers ages 8 and up, beginner to advanced. Hip Hop is a highly stylized form of jazz through the use of isolations, popping and free movement. These upbeat high tempo classes aim to develop not only a dancer’s technique but enhance their performance quality. Students who join this class will perform in our annual recital at the end of the year.

Footworks offers a "boys only" Hip Hop class Fridays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
